A UNICEF disse em um relatório na segunda-feira que quase 2,2 milhões de crianças no país empobrecido precisam de cuidados imediatos por causa da desnutrição aguda, com 1,7 milhões de pessoas sofrendo de desnutrição aguda moderada.
Esta é uma cifra aumentada de quase 200% das da registradas em 2014.
"A desnutrição no Iêmen está em um ponto alto e crescente", disse o enviado da UNICEF ao Iêmen, Meritxell Relano, acrescentando que "o estado de saúde das crianças no país mais pobre do Oriente Médio nunca foi tão catastrófico como hoje".
O relatório diz que as áreas mais afetadas estão nas províncias de Hudaydah, Sa'ada, Ta'izz, Hajjah e Lahij, com Sa'ada tendo as maiores taxas de desnutrição entre as crianças.
